AutoCAD Dimension leader

I am a relative newbie to Auto Cad software but have been trying to create a dimension arrow following a line.

It is not straight but made up of straight segments and I want the double arrow to follow the line in a parallel fashion.

Then place the dimension of the total line segments in the center of the double arrow as it would in an aligned dimension fashion.

Anyone know of how to achieve this?

I have seen it on plans so know that it can be done.
